Ayodhya was historically known as Saket. Early Buddhist and Jain canonical texts mention that religious leaders Gautam Buddha and Mahavira visited and lived in this city. It is also described in Jain texts as the birthplace of five Tirthankaras, Rishabhnath, Ajitnath, Abhinandannath, Sumatinath and Anantnath and is associated with the legendary Bharat Chakravarti. Since the Gupta period, Ayodhya and Saketa have been mentioned as the name of the same city in many sources.https://ayodhya.nic.in/
The mythological city of Ayodhya (Ramayana), currently known as Ayodhya, is the birthplace of the Hindu god Rama of Kosala and the setting of the great epic Ramayana and its many versions. This belief is the main reason for Ayodhya being revered as a very holy city for Hindus. Due to its recognition as the birthplace of Rama, Ayodhya is considered the first of the seven most important pilgrimage sites for Hindus. It is believed that there was a temple at the alleged birthplace of Ram, which was demolished by the orders of the Mughal emperor Babur or Aurangzeb and a mosque was built in its place. In 1992, the mosque was demolished by a Hindu mob due to a dispute over the site, which was intended to rebuild a grand temple of Rama at that place. A five-judge full bench of the Supreme Court heard the ownership cases from August to October 2019 and ruled that the land belonged to the government as per tax records, and ordered it to be handed over to a trust to build a Hindu temple. It also ordered the government to give an alternative 5 acres (2.0 ha) of land to the Uttar Pradesh Sunni Central Waqf Board to build the Ayodhya Mosque in lieu of the demolished Babri Masjid. Construction of Ram temple started in August 2020
